INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana University has permanently closed its Muslim Philanthropy Initiative following an oversight effort led by State Rep. Andrew Ireland.

The closure follows an investigation into the program’s relationship with Hayat Yolu, a Turkish nonprofit sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury Department in March for supporting Hamas.

“Indiana University made the right decision by closing the Muslim Philanthropy Initiative,” Ireland said.

After the Washington Free Beacon reported on the partnership, Ireland led a coalition of eight Indiana lawmakers demanding an investigation, preservation of records, and disclosure of financial support exchanged with the organization.

IU confirmed that the initiative conducted programs with Hayat Yolu in Istanbul in July 2025 and Jakarta in January 2026, before the sanctions were imposed. The organization also reimbursed the initiative’s director for travel and related expenses.

The university’s response included suspending training activities, reviewing international partnerships, and strengthening oversight before ultimately closing the program.

Ireland’s work on the issue reflects his commitment to holding taxpayer-supported institutions accountable and ensuring public universities exercise proper oversight of their international partnerships.
