INDIANAPOLIS — State Rep. Andrew Ireland called on Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears to investigate allegations involving Mayor Joe Hogsett’s administration or request a special prosecutor.
The call followed reporting by IndyStar and Mirror Indy about donor requests for city contracts and pressure on city employees to participate in campaign activities.
“Taxpayer money isn’t a campaign slush fund,” Ireland told the outlets.
A former deputy Indiana attorney general, Ireland said the reported conduct warranted a formal investigation using the fact-finding tools available to law enforcement. He emphasized that calling for an inquiry was not a declaration that anyone should be charged.
Ireland is pressing for answers because taxpayers deserve confidence that city decisions serve the public and that government employees and resources are used appropriately.
